At the age of 12 she has already appeared at Carnegie Hall, as well as with l&#8217;Orchestre M\u00e9tropolitain du Grand Montr\u00e9al and the Montreal Symphony Orchestra. We met Marika and her father to discover how and when it all started.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It began when I entered school at 5,&#8221; the pianist states simply.&#8221; I wanted to study music and discussed it with my father, who asked if I wanted to learn to play the piano. He first suggested violin, but I was really more interested in piano, so when school started he registered me at l&#8217;\u00c9cole de musique de Verdun with Yolande Gaudreau, who remained my teacher until this year.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.propiano.org\/romanian\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/MB.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-664\" title=\"MB\" src=\"http:\/\/www.propiano.org\/romanian\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/MB.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a>Marika follows the regular scholastic curriculum while managing to practice three or four hours daily (depending on the time of year). Until last year she also took ballet classes, which predate even her piano lessons, but she decided to discontinue these to make time to practice since she wants to succeed in playing the works of her favourite composer. &#8220;Since the beginning this has always been Beethoven,&#8221;she admits. &#8220;I began by listening to <em>Beethoven Lives Upstairs<\/em>, a CD that tells the life story of the composer, illustrated with excerpts from his works. I liked to listen to it before falling asleep and told myself that I would like to learn those pieces. When I was in fourth grade I did a project on Beethoven, and I found it wonderful to understand his life better and see how this is reflected in his music.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Pierre Bournaki fully understands how to play a decisive role in the various aspects of Marika&#8217;s studies. He explains that &#8220;it is essential for any parent to recognize their child&#8217;s talent. In Marika&#8217;s case it was very clear from the start that she possessed musical gifts. I could determine her interest because we would often listen to music at home. It was also important to appreciate how quickly she learns: to see her advance from simple exercises, to a Bach two-part invention, then to a prelude and fugue, followed by sonatinas and sonatas. If the ability is there this happens naturally. There is parallel work for the parent that consists of creating conditions that are favourable and motivating. You would certainly not begin with three hours of practising a day, but perhaps three quarters of an hour, and build it gradually from year to year. Travel opportunities can also be a good incentive, because after a certain level there are competitions everywhere in which children can participate. They can see how they measure up against others, and probe their interest in going further. We may or may not like competitions but they are part of a musician&#8217;s life.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Marika has already participated in a number of international competitions and won several prizes. In June 2002 she won first prize at the Pro-Piano Romania International Competition in Bucharest and also received the special prize from the Association of Music Critics for a recital at the George Enescu Memorial House in Sinaia. On the same trip to Romania she was invited to give a recital at the Canadian Embassy in Bucharest.<\/strong> However, what particularly brings a sparkle to her eyes is not connected to the world of competitions. &#8220;We visited the birthplace of Bartok,&#8221; she remembers bursting with joy, while her father adds that they even went to Dracula&#8217;s castle!<\/p>\n<p>Good training is clearly based on a consistent relationship with a teacher, and that is the key to steady progress. Pierre Bournaki explains that the choice of teacher is of prime importance. &#8220;As in all subjects a poor teacher can have a negative effect on even a talented child. I had inquired about Marc Durand, who teaches at the University of Montreal, and it was he who referred us to Yolande Gaudreau, who by chance was also the music teacher at Marika&#8217;s school, so it worked out perfectly. To ensure ongoing advancement, parents must subsequently be attentive to their child&#8217;s progress in order to determine when it is time to change teachers. This can be very difficult because student and teacher have built up a special relationship, nevertheless you must be vigilant in preventing stagnation. Marika&#8217;s studies with Madame Gaudreau are now completed and in September 2003 she will attend the Pre-College Division at The Juilliard School in New York every Saturday. While researching a new teacher I came across the name of Yoheved Kaplinsky, Chair of the (Juilliard) piano department. Since then we returned to New York several times to see if Marika was comfortable with this teacher and if the chemistry worked, and following an audition last year she was accepted into the program. &#8221;<\/p>\n<p>If Marika&#8217;s father can guide her through the complex musical apprenticeship and seems to know the rules well, he has an advantage over most parents. &#8220;I am a musician myself,&#8221; he explains. &#8220;I have a good understanding of where Marika is headed in the musical profession, and I know the obstacles she must overcome. When I began to study music I had no idea about life as a professional musician. Although it is exciting and stimulating it is still work. I think that 95% of musicians don&#8217;t know what awaits them once they attain professional status. They cannot imagine what it is like to be an orchestral musician, to perform day after day, night after night, and maintain the passion.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I attended Juilliard when I was 19, following two years in Europe, but realized too late that I did not have the necessary requisites to meet the demands of professional life as I perceived it. I was with students who had attended Juilliard for six or seven years, and who had already established names and contacts. I completed my Bachelor&#8217;s and Master&#8217;s degrees but eventually developed other interests because I knew that I did not want to teach violin or become an orchestral musician. I therefore changed sectors, but I understand very well what did not work in my case and believe I can help Marika avoid repeating those errors.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>L&#8217;\u00e9ducation d&#8217;un virtuose<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Par <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scena.org\/authordesc.asp?id=29\" target=\"_blank\">R\u00e9jean Beaucage<\/a><\/em><\/strong> \/ 3 septembre 2003<\/p>\n<div align=\"center\">\n<hr align=\"center\" size=\"2\" width=\"100%\" \/>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>M<\/strong>arika Bournaki est n\u00e9e en 1991 \u00e0 Montr\u00e9al et on peut certes penser qu&#8217;elle est promise \u00e0 une grande carri\u00e8re de pianiste. \u00c0 l&#8217;\u00e2ge de 12 ans, son premier passage \u00e0 Carnegie Hall et ses premiers concerts avec l&#8217;Orchestre M\u00e9tropolitain du Grand Montr\u00e9al ou l&#8217;Orchestre symphonique de Montr\u00e9al sont d\u00e9j\u00e0 choses du pass\u00e9. Nous aurons plaisir \u00e0 suivre le d\u00e9veloppement de cette carri\u00e8re, mais nous \u00e9tions curieux de rencontrer Marika et son p\u00e8re afin de voir o\u00f9 et comment tout cela a d\u00e9but\u00e9.<\/p>\n<p>\u00ab \u00c7a a commenc\u00e9 lorsque je suis entr\u00e9e \u00e0 l&#8217;\u00e9cole, \u00e0 5 ans, lance simplement la pianiste. Je voulais faire de la musique et j&#8217;en avais parl\u00e9 \u00e0 mon p\u00e8re, alors il m&#8217;a demand\u00e9 si je voulais apprendre le piano. Il m&#8217;a d&#8217;abord propos\u00e9 le violon, mais j&#8217;avais vraiment plus d&#8217;int\u00e9r\u00eat pour le piano. Donc, \u00e0 la rentr\u00e9e scolaire, il m&#8217;a inscrite \u00e0 l&#8217;\u00e9cole de musique de Verdun avec Yolande Gaudreau, qui est rest\u00e9e mon professeur jusqu&#8217;\u00e0 cette ann\u00e9e. \u00bb<\/p>\n<p>Marika arrive \u00e0 suivre une formation scolaire r\u00e9guli\u00e8re tout en pratiquant quotidiennement de trois \u00e0 quatre heures de piano (selon le moment de l&#8217;ann\u00e9e). \u00c0 cela s&#8217;ajoutait jusqu&#8217;\u00e0 l&#8217;ann\u00e9e derni\u00e8re des cours de ballet qu&#8217;elle a commenc\u00e9 \u00e0 suivre avant m\u00eame de d\u00e9buter ses le\u00e7ons de piano, mais qu&#8217;elle a choisi d&#8217;abandonner. Car elle aura besoin de temps pour bien r\u00e9p\u00e9ter si elle veut arriver \u00e0 jouer les \u0153uvres de son compositeur pr\u00e9f\u00e9r\u00e9 : \u00ab Depuis le tout d\u00e9but, mon compositeur pr\u00e9f\u00e9r\u00e9 est rest\u00e9 Beethoven, avoue-t-elle. J&#8217;ai commenc\u00e9 par \u00e9couter <em>Beethoven habite \u00e0 l&#8217;\u00e9tage<\/em>, un CD qui raconte l&#8217;histoire du compositeur et qui nous fait entendre beaucoup d&#8217;extraits de ses \u0153uvres. J&#8217;aimais \u00e9couter \u00e7a avant de m&#8217;endormir et je me disais que j&#8217;aimerais apprendre ces pi\u00e8ces-l\u00e0. En quatri\u00e8me ann\u00e9e, j&#8217;ai fait une recherche sur Beethoven et j&#8217;ai trouv\u00e9 \u00e7a merveilleux de mieux comprendre sa vie et de voir comment elle se refl\u00e8te dans sa musique. \u00bb<\/p>\n<p>Pierre Bournaki a, bien entendu, jou\u00e9 un r\u00f4le d\u00e9cisif dans les diff\u00e9rents aspects de l&#8217;apprentissage de Marika. Il explique : \u00ab Ce qui est primordial pour le parent, quel qu&#8217;il soit, c&#8217;est de savoir reconna\u00eetre le talent de l&#8217;enfant. Dans le cas de Marika, il a \u00e9t\u00e9 tr\u00e8s clair d\u00e8s le d\u00e9part qu&#8217;elle avait un talent pour la musique. J&#8217;ai pu d\u00e9celer son int\u00e9r\u00eat parce que nous \u00e9coutions souvent de la musique \u00e0 la maison. Il faut aussi pouvoir appr\u00e9cier la vitesse de son apprentissage : la voir passer de simples exercices \u00e0 une invention \u00e0 deux voix de Bach, puis \u00e0 des pr\u00e9ludes et fugues, et ensuite des sonatines, des sonates, c&#8217;\u00e9tait une merveille ! Si le talent est bien l\u00e0, cet apprentissage se fait naturellement. Il y a parall\u00e8lement \u00e0 cela une autre partie du travail du parent qui consiste \u00e0 cr\u00e9er des conditions favorables \u00e0 la motivation au travail. Bien s\u00fbr, on ne commence pas par trois heures de pratique chaque jour, mais plut\u00f4t trois quarts d&#8217;heure, et on augmente le temps de r\u00e9p\u00e9tition d&#8217;ann\u00e9e en ann\u00e9e. Cela se fait graduellement. La possibilit\u00e9 de faire des voyages peut aussi motiver l&#8217;enfant \u00e0 travailler. Parce que, \u00e0 partir d&#8217;un certain niveau, il y a des concours un peu partout auxquels l&#8217;enfant peut participer. Il a l&#8217;occasion de se mesurer aux autres et aussi tester son d\u00e9sir d&#8217;aller plus loin. Et puis, la comp\u00e9tition, on l&#8217;aime ou on ne l&#8217;aime pas, mais \u00e7a fait partie de la vie des musiciens. \u00bb<\/p>\n<p><strong>Marika a d\u00e9j\u00e0 particip\u00e9 \u00e0 bon nombre de concours internationaux et remport\u00e9 de nombreux prix. En juin 2002, elle remportait le <\/strong><strong>Premier Prix au Concours international <em>Pro-Piano Romania<\/em> \u00e0 Bucarest <\/strong><strong>et, lors du m\u00eame voyage, elle recevait aussi le Prix sp\u00e9cial de la critique musicale pour un r\u00e9cital donn\u00e9 \u00e0 la Maison George Enescu, \u00e0 Sinaia. Toujours durant ce s\u00e9jour en Roumanie, on l&#8217;invitait \u00e0 donner un r\u00e9cital \u00e0 l&#8217;ambassade du Canada \u00e0 Bucarest, mais ce dont elle se souvient particuli\u00e8rement et qui illumine ses yeux lorsqu&#8217;elle en parle, n&#8217;a rien \u00e0 voir avec le monde de la comp\u00e9tition : \u00ab On a visit\u00e9 la maison natale de Bartok ! \u00bb lance-t-elle dans un \u00e9clat de joie. Et son p\u00e8re d&#8217;ajouter : \u00ab On a aussi \u00e9t\u00e9 au ch\u00e2teau de Dracula ! \u00bb<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>L&#8217;apprentissage repose \u00e9videmment sur une relation suivie avec un professeur, et c&#8217;est l\u00e0 que r\u00e9side la cl\u00e9 d&#8217;un bon cheminement. Pierre Bournaki explique : \u00ab Le choix de la personne qui sera son professeur rev\u00eat une importance capitale. Parce que, comme dans toutes les mati\u00e8res, un mauvais professeur peut avoir un effet tr\u00e8s n\u00e9gatif sur un enfant, m\u00eame si ce dernier est talentueux. Pour Marika, je me suis renseign\u00e9 aupr\u00e8s de Marc Durand, qui enseigne le piano \u00e0 l&#8217;Universit\u00e9 de Montr\u00e9al et c&#8217;est lui qui nous a recommand\u00e9 \u00e0 Yolande Gaudreau. Le hasard a voulu qu&#8217;elle soit \u00e9galement professeur de musique \u00e0 l&#8217;\u00e9cole r\u00e9guli\u00e8re que fr\u00e9quentait Marika, ce qui \u00e9tait parfait. Par la suite, le parent doit \u00eatre attentif au progr\u00e8s de l&#8217;enfant afin de d\u00e9celer, \u00e9ventuellement, le moment o\u00f9 il pourrait \u00eatre temps de changer de professeur, pour continuer la progression. Ce changement peut \u00eatre difficile, parce que l&#8217;enfant construit une relation privil\u00e9gi\u00e9e avec son professeur, mais il faut n\u00e9anmoins \u00eatre vigilant dans la pr\u00e9vention de la stagnation. \u00bb Il poursuit : \u00ab Dans le cas de Marika, ses le\u00e7ons avec madame Gaudreau ont maintenant pris fin et elle commencera en septembre 2003 \u00e0 suivre des cours tous les samedis dans le programme <em>pre-college<\/em> de l&#8217;\u00e9cole Juilliard \u00e0 New York (un programme qui accueille g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement les \u00e9l\u00e8ves \u00e0 compter de l&#8217;\u00e2ge de 17 ans). C&#8217;est en faisant des recherches pour un nouveau professeur que j&#8217;ai crois\u00e9 le nom de Yoheved Kaplinsky, qui est directrice du d\u00e9partement de piano \u00e0 Juilliard. Nous sommes all\u00e9s, depuis, quelques fois \u00e0 New York, pour voir s&#8217;il serait agr\u00e9able \u00e0 Marika de travailler avec ce professeur, pour voir si la chimie allait op\u00e9rer, mais c&#8217;est suite \u00e0 une audition qu&#8217;elle a pass\u00e9e l&#8217;ann\u00e9e derni\u00e8re qu&#8217;elle a \u00e9t\u00e9 accept\u00e9e dans le programme. \u00bb<\/p>\n<p>Si le p\u00e8re de Marika peut lui servir de guide dans le complexe apprentissage de la pratique musicale et s&#8217;il semble si bien conna\u00eetre les r\u00e8gles \u00e0 observer, on peut quand m\u00eame dire qu&#8217;il a un peu d&#8217;avance par rapport \u00e0 la majorit\u00e9 des parents. \u00ab J&#8217;ai un certain avantage sur d&#8217;autres parents parce que je suis moi-m\u00eame musicien, explique-t-il. J&#8217;ai une bonne compr\u00e9hension de ce qu&#8217;est le monde professionnel de la musique, vers lequel Marika se dirige, et je sais quelles sont les \u00e9tapes qu&#8217;elle devra franchir. Lorsque j&#8217;ai commenc\u00e9 \u00e0 \u00e9tudier la musique, je n&#8217;avais aucune id\u00e9e de ce que pouvait \u00eatre la vie d&#8217;un musicien professionnel. Parce que, bien que ce soit un travail passionnant et stimulant, il faut bien comprendre que c&#8217;est un <em>travail<\/em>. Je pense que 95 % des musiciens ne savent pas ce qui les attend au niveau professionnel et n&#8217;imaginent pas ce que c&#8217;est que d&#8217;\u00eatre un musicien d&#8217;orchestre jour apr\u00e8s jour et soir apr\u00e8s soir tout en continuant \u00e0 cultiver la passion. Je suis pass\u00e9 moi-m\u00eame par Juilliard, \u00e0 19 ans, apr\u00e8s deux ans en Europe, mais j&#8217;ai r\u00e9alis\u00e9 trop tard que je n&#8217;avais pas en main les atouts n\u00e9cessaires pour r\u00e9pondre aux exigences de la vie professionnelle telle que je l&#8217;avais envisag\u00e9e. J&#8217;\u00e9tais avec des \u00e9tudiants qui fr\u00e9quentaient Juilliard depuis six ou sept ans, qui avaient d\u00e9j\u00e0 un nom et des contacts. J&#8217;ai termin\u00e9 le baccalaur\u00e9at et la ma\u00eetrise et j&#8217;ai \u00e9ventuellement d\u00e9velopp\u00e9 d&#8217;autres int\u00e9r\u00eats, parce que je savais que je ne voulais par devenir un professeur de violon ou un musicien d&#8217;orchestre. J&#8217;ai donc chang\u00e9 de branche, mais je comprends bien ce qui n&#8217;a pas march\u00e9 dans mon parcours.
